Texas Rangers Lose Corey Seager to Injury

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager hurt his hamstring running the bases Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals.

The Texas Rangers suffered perhaps a serious injury Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals, as shortstop Corey Seager left the game in the fifth inning with left hamstring tightness.

The Rangers (7-4) rallied to win 8-5 in the 10th inning on Jonah Heim’s three-run walk-off homer.

Seager was injured while running to second base on an opposite-field double, his second hit of the game. He pulled up after reaching second and grabbed at his hamstring, prompting a lineup change.

“He’s been swinging the bat so well,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “You hate to see it because he’s been on fire. He’s just been squaring up everything, so we’ll reevaluate him. He’s got some tightness there and we’ll see where we’re at tomorrow.”

Utility man Josh Smith came in to pinch run and replace Seager at short.

Hamstring injuries are nothing new for Seager. While with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he missed about a month in 2019 with a left hamstring strain.

The Rangers will miss both Seager’s defense and bat. He was hitting.359 with a 1.007 OPS at the time of the injury. Seager slashed 245/.317/.455 in 2022, his first season with the Rangers.

The Rangers do have options if Seager is headed to the injured list, including Smith and Ezequiel Duran. Marcus Semien has also played shortstop for the majority of his career.

“We do have some coverage until we get him back,” Bochy said of Seager.

Texas (7-4) goes for the series sweep with Nathan Eovaldi (1-1, 4.22) on the mound Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
