Semien, Rangers Squander Chances at Yankees
The Texas Rangers were shut out for the sixth time this season in a 1-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
The Rangers (47-29) managed eight hits off Yankees pitching, led by starter Luis Severino (1-2) and four relievers. Ron Marinaccio got his second save for the Yankees (42-35).
Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien had three of those hits. The Rangers had two runners on and no outs in the ninth, but Ezequiel Duran and Leody Taveras struck out before Semien popped up to end the game.
The American League West leaders went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Four Rangers hitters left runners in scoring position with two outs.
The Rangers were last shut out on June 7 when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0.
The Yankees broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning as Billy McKinney hit a home run to the right field seats off Rangers starter Jon Gray (6-3).
The Yankees managed just four hits. Gray threw five innings of three-hit baseball and gave up two walks. He also struck out four.
Grant Anderson threw two innings of scoreless relief, giving up a hit and striking up four. Joe Barlow threw one scoreless inning of relief.
The Rangers and Yankees end their three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Sunday at 12:35 p.m. CT.
The game will pit a pair of pitchers who are contenders to be selected for the American League All-Star team and contend for the AL Cy Young — Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (9-3, 2.80) and Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (8-1, 2.64).
Texas then heads back to Arlington for an eight-game homestand, starting with the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
