ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers found a potential closer in Aroldis Chapman on Friday.

Could Max Scherzer be the answer for the rotation?

A report from ESPN suggests the Rangers should covet the New York Mets right-hander to help fill the void left by Jacob deGrom's season-ending surgery.

Why wouldn't the Rangers want to add a three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer to their staff?

The only hold-up would likely be money. Scherzer is making $43.3 million this season and has a player option worth $43.3 million in 2024. He turns 39 later this month.

He still has dominating stuff, however. He's 7-2 with a 3.87 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings this season for the Mets, who began Saturday are 10 games under .500 and likely to be looking to clean house by the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

Perhaps the Mets would be willing to take on some of Scherzer's hefty salary in a trade for some of the Rangers minor league prospects, according to ESPN.

Another hurdle with Scherzer? He has a full no-trade clause. But if he's looking to win, joining the first-place Rangers might have enough allure.
