Texas Rangers Ready For Big May Road Trip

The Texas Rangers have spent most of their season thus far at home, but two multi-city road trips await in May.
In this story:

For the first month of the 2023 season, the Texas Rangers have been fortunate to have 18 of their first 30 games at Globe Life Field.

That’s about to change.

As the Rangers hit the road on Friday, they are about to play 19 of their next 25 games on the road.

It’s the next big hurdle for a team that has spent most of the first month of the season in a surprising place — the top of the American League West.

“It’s going to be important that we play on the road,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s the key to success, playing good on the road. They use the adage play .500 (on the road), but you know, we’d like to set the bar a little higher.”

Entering the upcoming trip — which starts on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels — the Rangers are .500 on the road (6-6).

The first trip is a big one. It’s the Rangers’ first three-city trip. It also comes against three AL West rivals. The Rangers play three against the Angels this weekend. Texas follows that with a three-game stint at the Seattle Mariners before going to the Oakland Athletics for four games to wrap up next week.

It’s a 10-game trip and the Rangers don’t have a lot of room for error. The Angels will be within striking distance of the top of the division with a sweep of the Rangers.

The Mariners aren’t far behind, even though they’re under .500. The Athletics haven’t hit 10 wins going into the weekend.

The Rangers return to Globe Life Field from May 15-21 to host a pair of three-game series with the Atlanta Brave and Colorado Rockies. After that, the Rangers are on the road again for 10 days and nine games to vacate their home for the Big 12 tournament on Memorial Day weekend.

The Rangers head to the Pittsburgh Pirates — off to one of the best starts in baseball — followed by the Baltimore Orioles, a team the Rangers lost two out of three games to at home in April.

After an off-day, the Rangers wrap up the trip with three games at the Detroit Tigers.

Bochy is hoping for carry over from the Rangers’ unexpected first month.

“I think the guys did a great job,” Bochy said. “You know, where we’re at, we’ll take it.”
