Short Stint for Texas Rangers Prospect in Pro Debut
Pitcher Brock Porter made his Texas Rangers organizational debut on Thursday with the Low Class-A Down East Wood Ducks in a 5-4 loss to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers.
It was a short outing.
Porter lasted just 2/3 innings, giving up one hit, one run and striking out one. It was the walks that led to the short outing. Porter gave up four, as he ended throwing just 32 pitches, 12 for strikes.
Porter walked the first two hitters he faced, thought the leadoff hitter was caught stealing second. Porter then gave up a single, struck out a hitter and threw a wild pitch that advanced runners 90 feet.
He issued another walk to load the bases and another to bring home the Cannon Ballers’ first run. After that he was replaced by Seth Clark.
Porter has already earned Top 100 prospect status at MLB.com, one of six current Rangers prospects in the Top 100.
The Rangers drafted Porter in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
Some scouts projected Porter as the top high school pitcher in the draft and the Rangers selected him from St. Mary's Prep (Michigan), even though they didn’t have a pick in the second or third rounds.
Porter was already committed to Clemson. But the Rangers made it a priority to get Porter in the system, paying him a fourth-round bonus record of $3.7 million.
He’s a two-time Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year and 2022 national Gatorade Player of the Year after going 9-0 with a 0.41 ERA, 115 strikeouts in 58 innings and three no-hitters.
