Texas Rangers Set Bullpen Session for Nathan Eovaldi
While Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi isn’t ready for a rehab assignment just yet, this weekend’s series with the San Francisco Giants could say a lot about how much longer the club has to wait for their ace right-hander.
Eovaldi threw a light bullpen session on Wednesday in Oakland, per MLB.com, with Rangers manager Bruce Bochy saying that Eovaldi was "ramping it up pretty good."
However, he’s not at full effort yet. But that could be coming.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Eovaldi could throw a more significant bullpen session on Saturday before the second of three games with the Giants.
If that goes well, the Rangers may have a better sense of what Eovaldi should do next.
Earlier this week, Rangers general manager Chris Young told 105.3 The Fan that Eovaldi was “trending in the right direction” in his recovery and that the team was “slowing building him back up.”
Young, however, didn’t put a timetable on Eovaldi’s return, saying only the team will go “as fast as we can but as slow as we need to.”
Eovaldi continues to work his way back from the forearm strain that put him on the injured list on July 30. He played catch last week while the team was at Globe Life Field, and at the time Bochy said that he would need two to three weeks to build back up.
Eovaldi also threw a pain-free bullpen that weekend.
Bochy didn’t rule out ramping Eovaldi up without a rehab assignment, as the team did with Jacob deGrom earlier at the start of this season.
Eovaldi has made just one start since the All-Star break, throwing six shutout innings on July 18 in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Globe Life Field. Eovaldi is 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA for the season.
