Travis Jankowski, who has played outfield for the Texas Rangers this season, could start seeing live at-bats this week.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers outfielder Travis Jankowski should begin a rehab assignment next week, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday.

MLB.com later reported that Jankowski will report on Tuesday.

Jankowski was running sprints and getting in some agility work before Sunday’s 13-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. At the start of the homestand, Rangers general manager Chris Young said that Jankowski would not be ready to be activated when he was eligible on Friday.

But he’s making good progress.

“We don’t know where he’s going to be playing, but Tuesday or Wednesday he’s going to start playing, so he and Mitch (Garver) are kind of on the same schedule,” Bochy said.

Jankowski left the Rangers’ May 7 game with the Los Angeles Angels after tweaking a hamstring while crossing the plate in their 16-8 victory.

After the game he was diagnosed with right hamstring tightness. The Rangers put Jankowski on the injured list retroactive to May 8.

Jankowski is batting .309 with nine RBI so far this season. When shortstop Corey Seager was out of the lineup, Jankowski was one of the players Bochy turned to in the No. 2 spot in the batting order.

The Rangers are also 17-7 with Jankowski in the lineup this season.

The Rangers signed the former first-round pick before Spring Training and nearly cut him before it was clear that center fielder Leody Taveras would not be ready for Opening Day due to injury. The Rangers kept Jankowski and he’s made himself a valuable part of their outfield rotation.
