Watch: Rangers Prospect Thomas Saggese Hits Game-Tying Grand Slam
Texas Rangers infield prospect Thomas Saggese hasn’t hit a lot of home runs in his minor-league career, but he had perfect timing on Friday for the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders.
Down 7-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning against San Antonio, the bases were already loaded for another Top 30 prospect, designated hitter Aaron Zavala. He didn’t have a hit the entire game, but he was hit by a pitch, which brought home a run and cut the Mission’s lead to four.
Enter Saggese, the Rangers’ No. 15 overall prospect per MLB.com, who had just three home runs this season going into that at-bat.
In his fifth at-bat of the game Saggese finally had his first hit of the game and it was a big one — a grand slam that tied the game at 7-7 and sent it to extra innings.
In the 10th, the RoughRiders won the game on a walk-off RBI single by Luisangel Acuña, which also happened to be his only hit of the game.
Oddly, Saggese has another grand slam to his credit this season. In three minor-league seasons the Rangers’ fifth-round pick from 2020 has 29 career home runs.
Entering Saturday’s action with the Missions, Saggese was slashing .296.352/.439/.791 with four home runs and 33 RBI.
