Angels 'Like' Ex-Red Sox Superstar; Could Los Angeles Sign Six-Time All-Star?
With Opening Day right around the corner, some of the top remaining free agents finally are starting to sign.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell had been the top pitcher in free agency and reportedly agreed to terms on a deal with the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
Another one of the top free agents still available is former Boston Red Sox All-Star slugger J.D. Martinez.
The six-time All-Star spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and clubbed 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs but still is looking for his next opportunity.
One team that reportedly is showing interest in the star slugger is the Los Angeles Angels, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"(Jordan Montgomery), an October hero who proved better than the (New York Yankees) thought, would seem like another possibility," Heyman said. "But he has been linked more closely to the (Texas Rangers), Red Sox, (Chicago Cubs), and others.
"At this point, a less expensive star like Martinez might seem more possible. Word is the Angels like him, and the feeling is mutual. But the Angels may prefer to keep the (designated hitter) spot open for (Mike Trout) and Anthony Rendon, their other veteran name who’s much more injury-prone than Trout."
Martinez is 36 years old and likely won't land a massive deal at this point with the 2024 campaign about to kick off. Los Angeles has plenty of money to spend and signing the former Red Sox star would make a lot of sense.
