Mets Reportedly Looking To Sign Ex-Red Sox Superstar; Interest Is 'Mutual'
It sounds like one former Boston Red Sox star could end up landing in New York soon.
Former Red Sox superstar J.D. Martinez surprisingly still is looking for his next opportunity and reportedly is discussing a possible deal with the New York Mets, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"The Mets are among teams talking to star free agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez, and word is the interest is mutual, sources tell The Post," Heyman said. "Mets owner Steve Cohen has apparently given the go-ahead to seriously discuss Martinez even though the Mets are over the fourth-tier, so-called 'Steve Cohen tax,' and they’d have to pay a 110 percent tax on any new deals.
"The Mets like Martinez as a potential answer to solving a long-running lineup issue of protection for star cleanup man Pete Alonso, but other teams, including the Angels, remain involved for the hitting star."
Martinez spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after five seasons in Boston and impressed. The 36-year-old clubbed 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs while earning his sixth-career All-Star nod.
New York has been mentioned as a possibility multiple times for Martinez but somehow he still is available. A move to New York would make some sense to add some more power in the middle of the lineup around slugger Pete Alonso.
Martinez doesn't provide any defensive upside at this point in his career but he clearly still has some pop left in his bat and can help a team out in a major way.
