Ex-All-Star, Former Red Sox Infielder Reportedly To Test Free Agency After Hot Start To Season
A former member of the Boston Red Sox is looking for a new home after reportedly opting out of a minor league contract.
Former Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias reportedly is set to hit free agency after reportedly opting out of his minor league contract with the San Diego Padres, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Iglesias played for the Colorado Rockies in 2022 and impressed slashing .292/.328/.380 to go along with three home runs and 47 RBIs in 118 games, but was a free agent entering the 2023 campaign. The middle infielder was long rumored to potentially rejoin the Boston Red Sox, but a deal never came to fruition. Iglesias struggled to find a big league deal and signed with the Miami Marlins to a minor league contract in spring training but failed to make the big league club out of camp and became a free agent once again.
The 33-year-old eventually signed with the Padres to a minor league deal and impressed with the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas slashing .317/.356/.537 in 28 games to go along with four home runs and 27 RBIs. Iglesias now will have the chance to sign with any team to a minor league or big league contract.
Iglesias made his big league debut with the Red Sox in 2011 and has spent four total seasons with the club across two stints. The one-time All-Star seemed like a solid fit for a middle infield-needy Boston club, but nothing has come to terms and likely will remain the case now.
Hopefully, Iglesias can find another opportunity shortly and make his way back up to the big leagues in the not-so-distant future.
