Ex-Red Sox Outfielder Reportedly Has Interviewed For Open Spot In Surprise Move
One former member of the Boston Red Sox is throwing his hat in the ring for the club's top spot in baseball operations.
Boston fired former chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom before the end of the 2023 campaign and rumors have swirled about who could possibly take over. The attractiveness of the open position has come into question as many of the Red Sox's rumored top candidates declined to even interview for the role.
Although that is the case, rumors have started to grow over the last few days about who could end up landing the job. One name surprisingly popped up for the first time Friday afternoon as former Red Sox outfielder Gabe Kapler reportedly has interviewed for Boston's top job, according to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier.
"According to major league sources, former (San Francisco Giants) and (Philadelphia Phillies) manager Gabe Kapler has interviewed with the Red Sox about leading their baseball operations department," Speier said. "Kapler, 48, has spent the last six years managing — two seasons with the Phillies, four with the Giants — but was dismissed by San Francisco at the end of this season.
"Before managing, Kapler worked in the Dodgers front office as their farm director from 2014-17. That followed a playing career that included 12 seasons in the big leagues from 1998 through 2010, with a one-year hiatus to manage the Red Sox’ Single-A Greenville affiliate in 2007. Kapler played for the Red Sox from 2003-06."
Kapler is an intriguing name to pop up in the Red Sox's baseball operations choice. He played with the Red Sox from 2003-06 and won a World Series with the club in 2024. Since retiring, Kapler has managed the Giants and Phillies and took home the 2021 National League Manager of the Year award while with San Francisco.
It's unclear what Kapler's chances of landing the job are, but he joins fellow Boston World Series champion Craig Breslow as former Red Sox players now in the mix for the top baseball operations role.
