Ex-Red Sox Pitcher Reportedly Lands With Pirates After Inconsistent Season
One former member of the Boston Red Sox has found himself a new home.
Former Red Sox hurler Martín Pérez spent the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers after spending two seasons in Boston. Pérez joined the Rangers in free agency ahead of the 2022 campaign and earned his first All-Star appearance after a stellar season.
In 2022, Pérez logged a 2.89 ERA across 32 starts for Texas. He took a step back in 2023 and compiled a 4.45 ERA in 35 appearances but made just 20 starts for the Rangers.
Now, Pérez will join the fourth team of his career in 2024 as he reportedly inked a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to FanSided's Robert Murray.
"Free-agent pitcher Martin Pérez and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a contract, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal," Murray said.
Pittsburgh took a major step forward last season and has been busy this offseason as it hopes to make more positive strides in 2024. The Pirates finished in last place in the National League Central in 2022 with just 62 wins. Pittsburgh finished in fourth place in the division in 2023 and won 14 more games with 76 wins.
Although the Pirates finished below .500, they made some ground in the standings and actually looked like they would compete for the division crown for much of the season before the wheels fell off.
Pérez may not be a splashy signing, but he is a former All-Star and immediately helps the Pirates' rotation.
