Ex-Red Sox Slugger Reportedly Could Be Reunion Candidate This Offseason
The Boston Red Sox are in an intriguing spot.
Boston has been busy in the trade market so far this offseason and already has traded away outfielder Alex Verdugo and landed outfielder Tyler O'Neill in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Red Sox entered the offseason needing to address the outfield position and at this point likely are done adding. Boston now needs to turn its focus to the starting rotation as well as the designated hitter spot.
It's unclear exactly who the Red Sox could target, but one player who could be in the mix is former Red Sox slugger Adam Duvall, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.
"The club believes an outfield group of (Wilyer Abreu), (Jarren Duran), O’Neill, (Ceddanne Rafaela), (Rob Refsnyder), and (Masataka Yoshida) is plenty capable, albeit somewhat inexperienced," Cotillo said. "They are now less likely to pursue a big right-handed outfield bat (like Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Teoscar Hernández, or Jorge Soler on the free agent market) but could still try to add a righty who can (designated hitter) while mixing in at first base (with second base another hole to fill).
"If the Sox believe Adam Duvall can cover some first base (a position he played early in his career), he makes a lot of sense as another option to join the mix."
Duvall joined the Red Sox in free agency last year and impressed. He only appeared in 92 games as he dealt with a wrist injury, but still clubbed 21 home runs, logged 24 doubles, and drove in 58 runs. He also slashed .247/.303/.531 while seeing time at all three outfield spots and designated hitter.
A move certainly makes sense, especially because the Red Sox could use another right-handed bat.
