Boston Red Sox fans certainly have a lot to be excited about.

Although it seems likely that the Red Sox won't make the postseason this season without a lengthy winning streak, Boston still has outperformed expectations this season plus the organization's farm system has taken a massive step forward. Over the last few years, the Red Sox's farm system has quickly gone from one of the worst to one of the best in baseball.

Boston -- for the first time in a few years -- seems to have impressive depth at the minor league level and soon enough, some of the top prospects will start making their way to Fenway Park. One player who likely is a few years away from making the jump to the big leagues but already should make Red Sox fans excited certainly is top pitching prospect Wikelman González.

González signed with Boston as an international free agent in 2018 and made his professional debut with the Red Sox's Dominican Summer League Club in 2019. The righty didn't pitch in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has made his way up the organization's farm system since 2021. Boston's No. 9 prospect made the jump to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs for the first time earlier this season and has been exceptional ever since.

The 21-year-old has made eight starts so far for Portland and has compiled an impressive 2.45 ERA and 3-1 record. González has pitched 40 1/3 innings so far for the Sea Dogs and has struck out 52 batters while allowing just 11 earned runs.

González likely is at least one full year away from the big leagues, but if he continues to pitch at his current level, a promotion to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox could make sense. It may be more likely that he lands in Triple-A early next season, but if he continues to impress, who knows what will happen. All in all, the future is bright in Boston.
