Red Sox Eyeing Star Duo In 'Obvious Pivot' After Missing Yoshinobu Yamamoto
The Boston Red Sox didn't get their man.
After another last-place finish in 2023, the Red Sox claimed this offseason would be "full throttle" as the club attempted to get back to contention. To this point, things haven't gone as planned although there is plenty of offseason left.
Boston attempted to land former Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto but missed out as he signed a massive deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now the Red Sox must regroup and return to the drawing board.
There still are plenty of intriguing arms available and two who could be options for the Red Sox are two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and steady lefty Jordan Montgomery, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"How do you define 'full throttle?' That's the term Red Sox chairman Tom Werner used to describe the team's approach to the offseason upon naming Craig Breslow as chief baseball officer," Rosenthal said. "But to this point, outfielder Tyler O'Neill has been the Sox's most notable addition.
"Snell or Montgomery represents an obvious pivot for a team needing a top-of-the-rotation starter. But even then, the Sox might struggle to contend in an American League East that includes the 101-win (Baltimore Orioles), always competitive (Tampa Bay Rays), rotation-rich (Toronto Blue Jays), and Juan Soto's (New York Yankees."
Both Snell and Montgomery have been linked to the Red Sox on multiple occasions at this point. Now that Yamamoto has made his decision, the free agent starting pitching market is expected to pick up in a major way.
If the Red Sox don't want to miss out on the top starters remaining, they're going to need to make a move quickly.
