Red Sox Legend Makes Bold Prediction Involving Superstar Shohei Ohtani
The Boston Red Sox could sure use a major splash this offseason.
Boston typically is known to be one of the highest-spending teams in baseball and a perennial threat to win the World Series. This hasn't been the case over the last few years. The Red Sox have won just 78 games in each of the last two seasons and need to make some serious changes.
The Red Sox have money to spend this offseason and sounds like they are willing to spend it. Boston already has been linked to some high-profile players but there is no bigger name available this offseason than Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani. Even though he won't be able to pitch for much of 2024 he still will be the best player available in free agency. The Red Sox have been linked to him on multiple occasions and it sounds like a move is a real possibility.
Red Sox legend Pedro Martínez even listed the club as the top choice for Ohtani when he was predicting where the superstar would land.
"I think he's going to be playing in Boston," Martínez said. "I would love to have him but I think (the Los Angeles Dodgers) is also suited for him. I think the (San Diego Padres) could be another team where he and his friend Yu Darvish could probably meet together. I know (Kodai Senga) is on the (New York Mets) and they can also bring the money to pay him. So it's going to be a few teams that can also afford him. Those are the few places I can think of Ohtani maybe landing but I have to say Boston number one."
While Martínez listed a few other clubs as possibilities for Ohtani, it's nice seeing the superstar linked to Boston once again. He immediately would help the club take another step toward the postseason. Boston likely will lose designated hitter Justin Turner this offseason in free agency but Ohtani could fill the role and give the club one of the best sluggers in baseball. When Ohtani returns to the mound in late 2024 or at the beginning of the 2025 season he also would give Boston the true ace they need.
Boston could bolster the rotation in other ways this offseason plus land Ohtani if they saw fit. If they could get him, it would be a good day in Boston.
