Red Sox Reportedly Linked To Former MVP; Could Boston Make Stunning Move For Star?
The Boston Red Sox could be in the market for a major splash this upcoming offseason.
If the 2023 season were to end today, the Red Sox wouldn't have a postseason spot. Although this is the case, the season has been a success so far for Boston. Many expected the Red Sox to finish below .500 but the club currently is 69-62. Plus, the organization's farm system has taken a massive step forward and is one of the best in baseball. The future is bright for the Red Sox.
Boston likely will be very busy this upcoming offseason as the club looks to fill out the remaining holes on the roster. The Red Sox could use at least one more top-end starter and another bat wouldn't hurt. One player the Red Sox surprisingly could have interest in reportedly is Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Cubs, who entered Saturday clinging to the final wild-card spot, and five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, certainly plan to be in the bidding to retain Bellinger," Nightengale said. "The Giants, who have been trying for years to lure a big star to San Francisco, figure to offer him the most money. The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees could be jumping in, too."
Bellinger struggled the last few seasons due to injuries after winning the 2019 National League Most Valuable Player Award but seemingly is healthy now and has been extremely impressive this season. The 28-year-old is slashing .321/.368/.546 to go along with 20 home runs and 75 RBIs in 99 games so far. Boston's outfield seemingly is full with Alex Verdugo, Jarren Duran, and Masataka Yoshida all under contract next season. Adam Duvall will be a free agent but also has impressed with the Red Sox this season.
Unless the Red Sox make a move or two -- like dealing away Verdugo -- a move may not make sense. But, if the Red Sox do make a trade, Bellinger would be a great addition. He's just 28 years old and his left-handed power would translate well to Fenway Park. It's certainly too early for speculation, but it would be nice to see Bellinger in a Red Sox jersey.
