Red Sox Reportedly 'Prioritizing' Marquee Starter Above Other Free Agents
The Boston Red Sox sounds like they want to add to the starting rotation.
Boston's biggest roster hole is in the rotation but if the club could land another frontline starter, perception about the club could immediately change.
The Red Sox have some intriguing young talent and should be able to compete for an American League Wild Card if they could add another starter. Boston has been linked to multiple hurlers in free agency and through possible trades but hasn't been able to add anyone since signing Lucas Giolito.
This could end up changing as Boston reportedly is "prioritizing" Texas Rangers postseason star Jordan Montgomery as a possible free agent option, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford.
"Feeling per sources is Red Sox prioritizing Jordan Montgomery over other potential free agent pitching additions, but still waiting for the price to come down," Bradford said.
This isn't the first time Montgomery has been linked to the Red Sox and likely won't be the last. Montgomery will continue to be mentioned as an option for Boston until he signs elsewhere.
The big lefty almost makes too much sense for the Red Sox. He won't be as expensive as fellow free agent Blake Snell and has been extremely sturdy over the last three seasons. He has logged an ERA under 4.00 in each of the last three seasons and has been able to eat up innings.
Montgomery still is looking for his next opportunity and would be the perfect addition to the Red Sox's rotation. It sounds like they know this too but money still is the biggest question.
