The Boston Red Sox could still end up landing one of the top free-agent pitchers despite speculation.

Boston has been in the news for seemingly all the wrong reasons this offseason. The Red Sox have made a few intriguing additions, but still are expected to finish in last place in the American League East.

If the Red Sox were to add another frontline starter to the rotation this could change, though. There still are some interesting options out there and Boston has been linked to Jordan Montgomery on multiple occasions.

He's still looking for his next team and the Red Sox are a realistic option. It's unclear if he will land with Boston, but it is still viewed as a possible landing spot, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Monty to the (Chicago Cubs), I'm not going to rule it out," Heyman said. "Monty's very good friends with Jameson Taillon, I'm sure he'd love to have Montgomery on the Cubs...The Red Sox were definitely talking to Montgomery about two weeks ago and that did seem to me like a consideration but there has been no movement on that since then...Montgomery: Red Sox, Cubs, (San Francisco Giants), and (Los Angeles Angels) if they get going more."

Montgomery still is available although Spring Training officially has kicked off. He likely will sign soon and the Red Sox seem like a very possible option, but the club likely needs to act fast.

He's the exact type of player who could change the perception of the club. Why not bring him in?
