Red Sox Still 'In Play' For Postseason Star To Help Bolster Starting Rotation
The Boston Red Sox could surprise some people if they can land another frontline starter.
If Boston could land a No. 1 starter -- like Jordan Montgomery -- the public perception of the club immediately would change. Plus, it wouldn't hurt to land a mid-tier option as well to add even more depth.
Boston has been linked to Montgomery on numerous occasions and he's still out there looking for his next opportunity. It's unclear if the Red Sox will land him, but they still are an option for him, according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden.
"Montgomery's first choice is believed to be a return to the (Texas Rangers), but the club and his agent, Scott Boras, have been far apart in negotiations," Bowden said. "Montgomery's value skyrocketed after he was dealt to Texas at the trade deadline and showed, particularly in the postseason, that he can perform when it matters most.
"The (Boston Red Sox), (Chicago Cubs), (San Francisco Giants), and (New York Yankees) have engaged with Montgomery and could be in play if he doesn't re-sign with the Rangers. The (Philadelphia Phillies) have also been linked to him."
Montgomery would be the perfect option for the Red Sox. He has compiled an ERA under 4.00 in each of the last three seasons and has pitched at least 157 innings in each campaign.
The big lefty is coming off arguably the best season of his career and had a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts with the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals. He was at his best down the stretch and in the postseason and helped lead Texas to the World Series.
Boston still has plenty of money to spend. Why not give some to Montgomery?
