Red Sox Reportedly Sign Ex-Phillies Utility Man To Add More Depth With Upside
The Boston Red Sox continue to add depth at the minor-league level.
Boston has been in the news all offseason and has been linked to seemingly every big-name player available. While this is the case, the Red Sox have opted to make smaller depth moves rather than splashy signings.
The Red Sox continued this trend Wednesday by signing former Philadelphia Phillies utility man Dalton Guthrie, according to Beyond the Monster's Chris Henrique
"The Red Sox have signed free agent outfielder Dalton Guthrie to a minor-league deal, per the transactions log," Henrique said.
Guthrie was selected in the sixth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft by the Phillies and has spent most of his professional career in the minor leagues to this point.
The 28-year-old made his big league debut with the Phillies in 2022 and appeared in 14 games. In the small sample size, he hit one home run, drove in five runs, and collected seven base hits. He appeared in 23 games with the Phillies in 2023 and saw time in left field, center field, right field, and third base.
He has seen time in all three outfield spots, third base, and second base throughout his professional career. Guthrie has appeared in 451 games at the minor league level and has clubbed 31 home runs, driven in 171 runs, stolen 43 bases, and has slashed .264/.326/.394.
Guthrie likely won't see much time with the Red Sox at the big league level, but it never hurts to add more depth at the minor league level who have seen time in the majors.
