Red Sox Rising Star Could Make History This Season Despite Disastrous Start To 2023
The Boston Red Sox may not find themselves in the postseason this year but that doesn't mean the club doesn't have a bright future.
Boston seemingly is ahead of schedule and currently is 73-70 so far this season. Many expected the club to finish well below .500 but now have a very strong chance of finishing better than Boston did in 2022. Plus, to make matters better for the Red Sox, the club's farm system has taken a massive step forward and is one of the best in baseball.
The Red Sox also have some very intriguing young talent at the big league level already. One player who has taken a major step forward this season and could even make history is young first baseman Triston Casas, according to the Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo.
"Right now Casas is one of just 11 rookies in MLB history to record 20+ home runs, 20+ doubles, 60+ RBI, and 60+ walks at age 23 or younger, and the other 10 are a who’s who of elite sluggers," Cerullo said. "If Casas can reach 70 RBI and 70 walks by season’s end that list would drop to five: Kris Bryant, Chipper Jones, Mark McGwire, Alvin Davis, and Ted Williams."
Not many people likely would have predicted this success for the young slugger toward the beginning of the season. Casas mightily struggled to open the season and on May 30 after 47 games was slashing .193/.308/.359 to go along with six home runs and 16 RBIs. The 23-year-old turned his season around in a major way and since June 1 is slashing .300/.396/.567 with 18 home runs and 48 RBIs in 72 games.
Although Boston may not bring home a World Series title this season, Casas' progress certainly should be exciting for Red Sox fans.
