The Boston Red Sox got some bad news Thursday.

Boston was back in action in Grapefruit League action at JetBlue Park as the Red Sox took on the Philadelphia Phillies. The Red Sox remained undefeated with a resounding 15-3 win -- which included not one, but two grand slams by the club -- but Boston did suffer it's first injury setback of spring training.

Catcher Connor Wong suffered a hamstring injury in the big Red Sox win and the initial look wasn't promising according to MLB.com's Ian Browne.

Wong entered camp with his role in flux. With Wong, Reese McGuire, and slugger Jorge Alfaro all seemingly battling for two spots on the Red Sox's active roster it was anyone's guess what role Wong could play, but many expected he at least would make the big league club.

The 26-year-old was acquired by Boston in the trade that sent former American League Most Valuable Player Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2020 MLB season. Since being acquired, Wong made his big league debut with the Red Sox in 2021 and has made 33 appearances over the last two seasons and has shown flashes of solid play.

Many have speculated that the Red Sox's most likely catcher room come Opening Day would be Wong and McGuire playing in some sort of platoon with Alfaro in the minor leagues or elsewhere unless he had a solid spring training.

While obviously nothing has been ruled out, if Wong were to miss extended time, it would be more likely that he started off in the minor leagues with McGuire and Alfaro on the big league club when Opening Day rolls around.

Until the Red Sox announce more information there's no way to be sure, but hopefully Wong's hamstring doesn't take him out of play for too long.
