Signing Ex-Mets All-Star Could Make Perfect Sense For Red Sox After Lucas Giolito Injury
The Boston Red Sox are in a tough spot.
Boston's starting rotation was its biggest weakness in 2023 and now seems to be in an even worse spot. The Red Sox traded Chris Sale away early in the offseason and signed Lucas Giolito effectively to fill his spot in the rotation.
Giolito unfortunately will miss time after suffering an elbow injury but it isn't clear how long he will be out. The veteran hurler could even end up missing the entire 2024 season according to speculation.
Now with Giolito expected to miss time, the Red Sox's starting rotation essentially is the same as last year but now without Sale.
Boston has been linked to multiple hurlers but doesn't seem willing to spend any money at this point. Jordan Montgomery has seemed like the most likely option for the Red Sox for weeks but it's unclear if they will pay what it will cost to sign him.
There still are some mid-tier options out there at least who could at least add some more depth to the Red Sox's rotation. One player who could make a lot of sense is former New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cleveland Guardians hurler Noah Syndergaard.
The hard-throwing righty at one point was one of the top hurlers in the National League but injuries completely derailed his career. He earned his lone All-Star nod as a member of the Mets.
Syndergaard had a tough 2023 season but was much more solid in 2022. He had a 3.94 ERA in 25 appearances and is a bounce-back candidate. If Syndergaard is fully healthy, he could be a solid option to help the back of the Red Sox's rotation with upside.
The righty has been throwing bullpens for teams and is looking for a big-league contract. Boston needs more help for the rotation and Syndergaard won't cost much. Why not give him a chance?
