Triston Casas Did Something Not Done By Red Sox Player In Almost 60 Years
The Boston Red Sox kicked off the 2023 season Thursday afternoon and officially began a new era at first base.
Triston Casas was drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft and ever since many have wondered how long it would take for him to take over the big league first base spot. Casas flew through the Boston farm system to the excitement of Red Sox Nation and now he's officially the team's everyday starting first baseman.
The 23-year-old made his Major League Baseball debut towards the end of the 2022 campaign, but now is fully with the club and made his first Opening Day start as the Red Sox fell against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon.
Casas making the start was historic in itself as he became the youngest first baseman to start Opening Day for the Red Sox since former All-Star and Gold Glove winner George Scott in 1967. Scott -- like Casas -- was 23-years-old when he earned the Opening Day start in 1967 for Boston.
The young slugger was impressive in his 2023 debut. Although he didn't collect a hit, he still drove in two runs and earned walk while also providing solid defensive play at first base in the tough Boston loss. Casas has been a bright spot in the Boston farm system over the last few years and now he will have the opportunity to take a step forward with the Red Sox this season.
There has been plenty of hype around the young first baseman ever since he was drafted by the Red Sox. With Casas firmly on the club's roster now and for foreseeable future, a new era officially is here in Boston.
