Veteran MLB Insider Links Red Sox As Possible Fit For Former All-Star Pitcher
The Boston Red Sox certainly need some help in the starting rotation.
Boston will enter the offseason with the biggest question marks on the roster being in the rotation. The Red Sox's offense has been impressive this season and the club actually has the third-best team batting average, but the starting pitching hasn't followed suit. Boston's rotation has dealt with injuries and inconsistent play so the Red Sox likely will need to add at least one and possibly two new starters this offseason.
The free agent starting pitching market is extremely deep and there likely will be a few other hurlers traded, as well. One player that reportedly makes sense for the Red Sox is Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"He is not a high-velocity, swing-and-miss type, but as an old-school starter who takes pressure off his team’s bullpen, Nola figures to be in demand," Rosenthal said. "He might not approach the six-year, $162 million deal the (New York Yankees) awarded Carlos Rodón last offseason. But with the Red Sox, (St. Louis Cardinals) and (Los Angeles Dodgers) among the many teams that need top-of-the-rotation starters, he should fare well."
Nola is the exact type of pitcher the Red Sox need right now. Boston's struggles this season stemmed in large part because the club's starting pitchers didn't get deep into games. This caused the bullpen to be overly strained. Nola may not be having the best season of his career, but he has pitched just about 200 innings for the Phillies and has been reliable. It's unclear exactly what will happen, but Red Sox fans should be keeping an eye on Nola.
