The Boston Red Sox have some work to do in the starting rotation and there are going to be plenty of intriguing hurlers available this upcoming offseason.

Boston isn't too far away from making its way back to the postseason but the biggest question mark the team has is who is going to be pitching. The Red Sox have plenty of money to spend and the free agent starting pitching market is going to be extremely deep. Three hurlers that could make sense for the Red Sox are Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola, Cleveland Guardians righty Lucas Giolito, and Texas Rangers hurler Jordan Montgomery, according to MassLive.com's Sean McAdam.

"Aaron Nola, however, has regularly provided innings," McAdam said. "In each of the last five full seasons, Nola has topped the 180-inning mark and three times, he’s gone over the 200-inning plateau. Nola is, for good or bad, also having something of a down season with the Phillies, with a 4.57 ERA, nearly three-quarters of a run higher than his career ERA.

"Lucas Giolito is another veteran who’s had a disappointing season. In fact, for the second straight year, he’ll finish with an ERA well over 4.00. But he’ll also take the ball every five days and pitch deep into games. This will mark the fourth time in the last five full seasons that he’s topped 173.1 innings. From the left side, there’s Jordan Montgomery, who, over the last three years, has averaged 171 innings. Signing two of those three — Nola, Giolito, and Montgomery — would give the Sox some certainty to the rotation."

Any of the three would make sense for the Red Sox. Boston likely will need to fill two or three spots in the rotation. Chris Sale and Brayan Bello will pencil in as starters -- if both are healthy. Tanner Houck or Garrett Whitlock possibly could nab a spot but adding someone a pair like Nola and Montgomery to the mix could help take the club to the next level.
