It sounds like the Yankees may be a fit to land a former Red Sox slugger this offseason

One former member of the Boston Red Sox could end up joining the club's biggest rivals this offseason.

Boston signed former Los Angeles Dodgers star Justin Turner last offseason and he shined with the club in 2023. He was one of the club's best hitters and also was a massive presence in the clubhouse. Turner has made it known that he would like to return to the Red Sox, but it may not be in the cards.

If Turner signs elsewhere this offseason, one club that could end up being a fit is the rival New York Yankees, according to SNY's Anthony McCarron.

"Justin Turner will be 39 later this month and may not profile as an everyday third baseman anymore, so this would be a positional risk," McCarron said. "He only played in seven games at third last year with the Red Sox, since Rafael Devers is their third baseman, and got most of his at-bats as a (designated hitter). But he'd provide options at both infield corners and DH and he, seemingly, will never stop hitting.

"Turner had 23 homers, 96 RBIs, and a .276/.345/.455 slash line for Boston last year. Off that, he turned down a $13.4 million player option and took a $6.7 million buyout instead, becoming a free agent. Perhaps signing him is a pathway to giving at-bats to Turner, one of the most consistent hitters of recent vintage, and (D.J. LeMahieu), while also offering an opportunity for (Oswald Peraza) to see some time, too."

New York had one of the worst offenses in baseball in 2023 so it makes sense that they would want to land someone like Turner. He will be 39 years old but still crushed 23 home runs and had a career-high 96 RBIs. Plus, the fact that he could help them out at third base -- which is a position of weakness for New York -- would be a major lift.

It sounds like Turner wants to return to the Red Sox in 2024, but he could end up wearing pinstripes instead.
