Ex-Yankees Veteran Hurler Placed On Waivers, Could Reunion Make Sense Down Stretch?

Should the Yankees consider a reunion with a veteran hurler?

One former member of the New York Yankees is available.

Former Yankees hurler Rich Hill reportedly was placed on waivers by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday as a way to shed salary down the stretch, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

"Heard the Padres have put Rich Hill on waivers to see if someone will pick him up for the last few weeks of the season," Sherman said. "If not, he will remain with the club."

Hill is a 19-year Major League Baseball veteran and has been a journeyman throughout his career. The 43-year-old spent 14 games with the Yankees during the 2014 campaign and impressed with a 1.69 ERA. Hill also has spent time with the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, and most recently the Padres this season.

New York has dealt with a wide range of injuries this season so it could make sense for the club to take a chance on Hill. At this point, it's significantly more likely than not the Yankees won't be in the postseason this year. With that being said, they still have 17 games left and could use another arm, especially with Luis Severino recently going down with injury.

Hill is a veteran who could at least help the Yankees get through the rest of the 2023 campaign. New York will have plenty of work to do in the starting rotation after the season but maybe Hill could be a bridge to help get them there.
