Former All-Star Hints Yankees Could Land Generational Talent This Offseason
The New York Yankees could make a major splash or two this upcoming offseason.
New York will be extremely busy as the club hopes to get back to the postseason in 2024. The Yankees have plenty of money to spend and a few holes on the roster that need to be filled. The starting rotation has led to the most headlines, but there are other areas the club needs to improve, as well. New York could use another left-handed bat in the lineup and one player that surprisingly could be available is San Diego Padres star Juan Soto.
Soto is just 24 years old and is in line for a massive contract. The young star already is a three-time All-Star and is one of the best players in baseball. San Diego hasn't come to terms on an extension with the star yet so he could end up getting traded this upcoming offseason. If he is dealt, former All-Star Cliff Floyd hinted the Yankees could be the most likely landing spot on MLB Network's MLB Tonight.
"I'm going to start with the Yankees at one," Floyd said. "I believe when you have the investment that you have in Aaron Judge, he needs that guy. I'm not saying that (Giancarlo Stanton) can't be that guy. You need Stanton healthy, we've been saying that for a long time. When Stanton is healthy we can see some of the things he can do. He's been doing damage in this game for a long time.
"But if you want to add a guy to the Bronx to get this thing turned around and get that later-part of the season guy in Soto. And you can afford him with that little bandbox. (Jasson Domínguez) just got surgery, you've got to think of that. You need a guy like Juan Soto. If I'm the Yankees I'm doing my best to get him this offseason."
Soto would make perfect sense for the Yankees if they could complete a move. The 24-year-old would form a fearsome duo with slugger Aaron Judge for years to come. It's unclear if he actually will be dealt, but if San Diego is looking for a trade partner, New York should be at the front of the line.
