InsideThePinstripes.com will review each of the New York Yankees’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.

No. 20: 2B/SS Jared Serna, Hudson Valley Renegades (High-A), Tampa Tarpons (Class-A)

Statistics for 2023: (122 games) .283/.350/.463/.813, 90 runs, 28 doubles, three triples, 19 home runs, 79 RBI, 49 walks, 90 strikeouts, 29 stolen bases, eight caught stealing.

At Tampa (95 games) .283/.350/.483/.833, 72 runs, 21 doubles, one triple, 19 home runs, 71 RBI, 40 walks, 75 strikeouts, 19 stolen bases, six caught stealing.

At Hudson Valley (27 games) .287/.350/.389/.739, 18 runs, seven doubles, two triples, no home runs, 8 RBI, nine walks, 16 strikeouts, 10 stolen bases, two caught stealing.

Season Transactions: Assigned to Tampa to start the season. He was promoted to Hudson Valley on Aug. 8.

Season Summary: While with Tampa, Serna had a highly productive season, with an above-average slash line, flashy power and production both in driving in runs sand scoring runs. He showed off his speed on the basepaths and 40 walks in 95 games isn’t a bad ratio for a player at his level. At Hudson Valley, Serna maintained the batting average, but the power dropped off as he adjusted to a new level of pitching. The walk-to-strikeout ratio remained steady and he continued to steal bases.

Path Through the Organization: He had an in with the Yankees, as his cousin is Yankees pitching prospect Luis Serna. The Yankees snapped Jared Serna up for $10,000 out of Mexico as part of its 2019 international signing class. Once he arrived, he impressed Yankees scouts with his plate discipline and consistent contact. As a fielder he is best suited for second base, per MLB.com’s scouting report, but he has been working at multiple positions in his three seasons in the minors.

What’s next: It bodes well that he’s a contact hitter that can produce for average while he is still in the lower reaches of the Yankees’ minor league system. Next year should be an opportunity for Serna to show that he can add the power to the average while at Hudson Valley. If he can do that, there’s a good shot at a promotion to Double-A Somerset by season’s end. At 5-foot-6, he has some Jose Altuve qualities, without the consistent power — for now.
