Mike Trout Reportedly Will Be Available, Could Yankees Land Superstar?
The New York Yankees reportedly may be looking for a new outfielder and a very surprising one may end up being available.
New York is going to be extremely active this offseason and one area of need for the club certainly is in the outfield. The Yankees have been linked to upcoming free agent slugger Cody Bellinger on multiple occasions and while a move could be in the cards, there may end up being an even better option available.
Los Angeles Angels superstar outfielder Mike Trout reportedly could become available through trade this upcoming offseason if he asks to be dealt, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Los Angeles Angels, perhaps for the first time, are open to trading All-Star outfielder Mike Trout if he indicates to them that he wants out," Nightengale said. "Trout has exclusive no-trade rights and said recently that he wants to have a private conversation with the front office and ownership about their direction."
If Trout actually were to become available, he would make plenty of sense for New York. The 11-time All-Star is one of the best players in and is just 31 years old. Although he has dealt with injuries in recent years, when he is healthy, he still arguably is the best player in baseball. He still has over $240 million left on his contract over the next seven years, but that deal could be somewhat comparable to what Bellinger will receive this offseason.
New York already has an immense amount of money on the books owed to Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Giancarlo Stanton, but Trout could be worth adding on salary. The Yankees aren't too far away from making it back to the postseason and a healthy Trout could put the team over the top. A move may be unlikely and more of a pipe dream, but if Trout actually is available, New York should at least call.
