Reunion With Star 'Very Much An Option' For Yankees This Offseason

It sounds like a reunion could be on the horizon in New York

Speculation has been ramping up about the New York Yankees.

New York has a hole on the roster in the starting rotation. The Yankees won 82 games last season but are going all in on the 2024 campaign. New York landed superstar slugger Juan Soto but he will be a free agent at the end of the season. It's unclear if he will re-sign with New York, so the club needs to maximize the season.

The Yankees need to add one more frontline starter to truly contend and they have been linked to a plethora of hurlers. One intriguing name that has popped up is lefty Jordan Montgomery.

Montgomery has developed into one of the most steady hurlers in baseball over the last three seasons and likely will get a massive deal soon. He has been linked to the Yankees, but some have speculated that he wouldn't come back to town because New York traded him away in 2022. 

Although this is the case, a move still could be on the horizon involving the Yankees and Montgomery, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.

"I do not buy for a moment the notion that because Montgomery was there before and traded that somehow he's not as much of an option now," Morosi said. "I think actually he's more an option at this moment because he's proven to them that he can get it done in the month of October which for a lot of guys on that list we don't know that about. 

"So, for me, Montgomery is very much an option for the New York Yankees and I do believe that in the industry, the Yankees adding a starting pitcher between now and the start of Spring Training in Tampa Bay is a virtual certainty."

Montgomery was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and made his big league debut with New York in 2017. He spent the first five-plus seasons of his big league career in New York.

It's unclear how likely a move is, but landing Montgomery certainly would help the New York starting rotation.
