Would New York Yankees Deal This Prospect at Trade Deadline?
The New York Yankees are exploring all sorts of trade scenarios to improve their team going into the Aug. 1 trade deadline — and that may include trying to acquire Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.
It could also include Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, who is considered one of the top bats on the potential trade market, though it’s not certain what the Cubs want to do.
But, to make a deal, you have to give up talent, and that usually means prospects for an organization like the Yankees, which is trying to stay in the Wild Card race.
MLB.com recently put together a list of prospects — one for each team — that could be dealt at the trade deadline. For the Yankees, the site selected outfielder and No. 3 prospect Spencer Jones.
Per MLB.com:
If the struggling Yankees want to make a major move, they have an abundance of outfield prospects they could offer. A Vanderbilt product drafted 25th overall a year ago, Jones is a 6-foot-6 athlete.
The Yankees drafted Jones in the first round of last year’s draft and he played 25 games between the Yankees’ Rookie League team and their Class-A team in Tampa, where he batted .344/.425/.538/.963 with four home runs and 12 RBI.
This season Jones is playing for High Class-A Hudson Valley, where in 73 games he’s batted .267/.340/.483/.823 with 12 home runs and 43 RBI.
If the Yankees are as outfield-rich as it sounds like, Jones could be a chip used to bring talent to New York as the trade deadline approaches.
