The New York Yankees reportedly received some rough injury news Friday afternoon.

New York starting catcher Jose Trevino reportedly will miss the remainder of the 2023 season after suffering a right wrist tear, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Jose Trevino needs season-ending wrist surgery," Hoch said. "Said that his wrist has been an issue dating back to spring training. He thought he could play through the pain, but it has reached a point where he needs to get it fixed. Expects to be ready for spring training 2024."

Trevino made his first All-Star team in 2022 and was having another solid season in New York but now will miss the rest of the 2023 campaign while recovering from his wrist injury. Before the injury, Trevino appeared in 55 games and clubbed five home runs to go along with 15 RBIs and a slash line of .210/.257/.312 for the Yankees.

The 30-year-old's tough injury now leaves a hole in the Yankees lineup. New York has catcher Kyle Higashioka still on the roster, but an addition may make sense. The Yankees have been tied to the St. Louis Cardinals at points about a potential trade, but if they opted for an in-house option, the Yankees could call up No. 2 prospect Austin Wells. The 24-year-old is the Yankees' top-ranked catching prospect and has been solid in 2023. Wells has slashed .233/.325/.437 to go along with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Wells is expected to make his big league debut in 2023 and at this point, it seems like a call-up should come sooner rather than later. If the Yankees don't make another move ahead of the trade deadline, keep an eye out for Wells to make his debut at some point this season.
