Yankees Reportedly Could Deal All-Star Ahead Of Trade Deadline If Struggles Continue
The New York Yankees aren't in a great place right now.
New York has lost eight of its last 10 games and currently is in last place in the American League East with a 50-47 record. Although the Yankees are above .500, they are a long way away from where many expected them to be at this point. Injuries certainly have hampered the Yankees' season, but many expected them to be World Series contenders this season.
As the August 1 trade deadline quickly approaches, the Yankees may not look the same shortly. One player who surprisingly could find himself playing elsewhere after the deadline reportedly is infielder Gleyber Torres, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"Another possibility would be to trade second baseman Gleyber Torres ($3.3 million) to open a spot for Oswald Peraza, a rookie earning the minimum salary," Rosenthal said. "Torres, an above-average offensive player with an additional year of club control remaining, would have value. But by trading him, the Yankees would risk thinning out their infield too much at a time when Josh Donaldson is out and DJ LeMahieu is struggling."
Torres made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2018 and has been with the club ever since. The two-time All-Star is just 26 years old and likely could bring in a solid trade haul if the Yankees opted to go that route. New York does have solid infield prospects knocking on the big league door looking for consistent playing time -- like Oswald Peraza -- so a move could make sense. Torres has one more year of team control before entering unrestricted free agency ahead of the 2025 campaign where he likely will cash in.
It may be sad to see someone like Torres go, but if the Yankees can't get back on track shortly, a move could make sense to give some younger guys opportunities while adding a few more prospects.
