Struggling Yankees Reportedly Could Deal Surprising All-Star Ahead Of Trade Deadline
What will the New York Yankees do ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline?
New York certainly is in an interesting spot. The Yankees entered the 2023 campaign as one of the World Series contenders, but injuries have derailed the club's season. New York has dealt with a wide range of injuries -- specifically to the club's starting pitching and outfielder Aaron Judge -- and currently sits in last place in the American League East at 50-47.
At this point, anything can happen ahead of the trade deadline. Although the Yankees likely will look to add, a few veterans could find themselves playing elsewhere on August 1. One player that reportedly could be on the move reportedly is starter Luis Severino, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"But as disappointing as the Yankees have been, as close as they are to getting under the highest threshold, an all-in approach appears unlikely," Rosenthal said. "Instead, the team might try to buy and sell, exploring deals to improve the roster, but at a potentially lower cost.
"The Yankees’ potential free agents include righty Luis Severino (owed approximately $5 million at the deadline), infielder-outfielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa ($2 million), outfielder Harrison Bader ($1.7 million) and lefty reliever Wandy Peralta ($1.2 million). Some of those players could be moved while others are added."
Severino has struggled so far this season and has pitched to a 6.66 ERA across 10 starts, but there's reason to believe he could turn things around. The 29-year-old didn't make his 2023 debut until May 21 as he recovered from injury and has allowed one run or fewer in two of his last four starts.
The two-time All-Star has dealt with a variety of injuries since 2019 but when he's healthy, he can be a top-of-the-rotation arm. There's no way to know what New York will do, but if you're a Yankees fan, keep a close eye on Severino.
