Yankees Could Part Ways With Controversial Pitcher This Offseason After Tumultuous Stint
The New York Yankees have some tough decisions to make this offseason.
New York won just 82 games in 2023 and needs to upgrade the roster if the club wants to get back to the postseason in 2024. The Yankees do have a lot of talent on paper and even were widely expected to compete for a World Series title in 2023 but things didn't pan out. Injuries are one of the biggest reasons for the Yankees' struggles but the club in general didn't live up to expectations.
The Yankees need to make some additions this offseason and will focus on adding some more pop to the lineup along with more pitching. New York is expected to see some turnover this offseason which will lead to the club needing to add even more. One player who could end up being let go this offseason is controversial hurler Domingo Germán, according to SNY's Phillip Martinez.
"Unfortunately, the off-the-field issues with Germán should give the Yankees enough to non-tender him," Martinez said. "There have been plenty of ups, some up-and-coming arms should be developed in the rotation while the money that would go to Germán could be used to add offense and plug some holes in the bullpen."
Germán is arbitration-eligible this offseason but it makes sense for New York to not tender him a contract. On the field, he has been inconsistent at best. At times he has seemed like he could be an important part of the rotation, but he compiled a 4.56 ERA in 20 appearances in 2023. Off the field, Germán has had multiple issues throughout his tenure with the Yankees -- including a suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy in 2019. At this point, it may be time for New York to move on.
