Yankees Fireballer Reportedly Wants To Return To Club Next Year
The New York Yankees are going to be busy this upcoming offseason fixing their starting rotation.
New York entered the 2023 campaign with extremely high expectations and wasn't able to live up to the hype. Injuries and inconsistent play derailed the season for New York and now the club has to make some tough decisions this offseason.
It's unclear exactly what the club will do, but it sounds like they are going to be busy. One area of focus certainly will be the rotation. New York has been linked to big names like Japanese star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but there are other moves the club could make. Fireballer Frankie Montas has missed the entire 2023 season so far but reportedly will make his season debut before the season ends. Plus, he reportedly wants to return to the Yankees in free agency this offseason, according to the New York Daily News Sports' Gary Phillips.
"Frankie Montas, expecting to pitch in the majors this weekend for the first time all year, said he'd like to return next year, though that's not something he and the Yankees have talked about yet," Phillips said. "Asked about that, Aaron Boone noted that Montas fought hard to get back."
Montas joined the Yankees in 2022 and struggled in eight starts pitching to a 6.35 ERA. Although this is the case, he has a career 3.90 ERA in seven big league seasons. The Yankees likely will look to nab a big-name free agent or two, but it wouldn't hurt to bring Montas back on a cheaper deal to help fortify the back of the rotation.
