Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Hints Reunion With Slugger Could Be Possibility For New York

Should New York consider a reunion with a former Yankees slugger?

The New York Yankees could be in the market for a new first baseman.

New York will be without the services of three-time All-Star Anthony Rizzo for the foreseeable future after recently being placed on the injured list. The Yankees currently have first baseman Jake Bauers on the roster who likely will shoulder most of the load in Rizzo's absence but a move to add first base depth could make sense. One player that is available and could make sense is former Yankees slugger Luke Voit.

Speculation has been swirling about a potential reunion with Voit since he recently opted out of a minor league deal with the New York Mets. The rumblings have spread enough to the point where Yankees manager Aaron Boone addressed the possibility of a reunion and he didn't exactly throw cold water on the idea, according to NJ Advance Media's Randy Miller

"Before the Yankees' 4-3 win over the (Houston Astros) on Thursday night, NJ Advance Media asked manager Aaron Boone if his club had interest in Voit," Miller said. "His response was response was very interesting. Smiling from ear to ear, Boone answered, 'We’ll see, we’ll see.'

"Hmmm. When a group of media chuckled at how giddy Boone appeared to be, he chimed in again 'No, no, no! You misread that answer.' Did we? Boone was asked a second time if the Yankees have any interest in signing Voit. 'I heard he opted out, but that really is the extent of it,” Boone said.'"

Voit joined the Yankees during the 2018 campaign and remained with the club through the 2021 season. The 32-year-old showed some serious offensive pop as a member of the Yankees and even led the American League with 22 home runs during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. It's unclear if a move will happen, but could make a lot of sense for the offense-needy Yankees.
