Yankees Reportedly Could Land Star Slugger As Club Looks To Rebuild This Offseason
The New York Yankees are in an interesting spot.
New York has had a disappointing season and is 79-77 but isn't too far away from making its way back to the postseason. The Yankees have dealt with a surprising amount of injuries this season and it certainly is a major reason why the team has struggled. New York will be busy this offseason and looking to add, but better health may be enough to get the club back to the postseason.
While better health will improve the Yankees, adding another slugger or starting pitcher could help. One player who has been mentioned as a possible fit multiple times is Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger, according to Jon Heyman.
"Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman both would fit, but the competition will be keen," Heyman said. "Bellinger looks especially enticing as an outstanding center fielder and left-handed hitter who has regained near-MVP form on the North Side of Chicago. He’d be a great pickup, as long as they let him do what he’s doing now and don’t mention the words “launch” or “angle.”
Bellinger has been exceptional for the Cubs this season. The 2019 National League Most Valuable Player struggled over the last few seasons with injuries but has been healthy for the most part this season and has regained his form. Bellinger has been one of the best outfielders in baseball this year and has slashed .305/.355/.531 with 26 home runs and 95 RBIs in 125 games played.
The 28-year-old likely will receive the largest contract in free agency for an offensive player not named Shohei Ohtani and the Yankees make perfect sense as a fit.
