The New York Yankees are in a tough spot, but it doesn't sound like they are giving in any time soon.

New York has the talent to contend for a World Series title but injuries and inconsistent play have thrown a wrench into the season. The Yankees likely will get much healthier shortly and with the trade deadline quickly approaching on August 1, it sounds like the club still plans on competing this season rather than turning their focus to the 2024 campaign.

The Yankees reportedly plan to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline and reportedly will target an outfielder and relief pitcher, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Yankees people still hope and believe they will end up buying a piece or two and, assuming the team doesn’t fall back over the next few days, they plan to target an outfielder and a bullpen piece," Heyman said.

There's less than a week to go until the trade deadline and New York still are within range of a postseason spot. The Yankees are just two-and-a-half games back of the final American League Wild Card spot. Especially if slugger Aaron Judge returns shortly, realistically could make up some ground in the standings.

New York has been connected to several potential stars in the trade market. The best potential offensive player on the market is Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger and the Yankees have been linked as a trade partner. New York also has been connected to Washington Nationals slugger Jeimer Candelario among others. The Yankees also have been linked to several star pitchers including Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman and San Diego Padres ace Blake Snell, although a move for either is unlikely. There's no way to know who the Yankees will be busy ahead of the trade deadline and likely make a move or two.
