The New York Yankees may be in the market for a new closer this offseason.

New York likely is going to get creative this offseason. After winning just 82 games in 2023, they have plenty of work to do. The Yankees already have been linked to some of the biggest stars who could be available. From Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger to Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and even San Diego Padres star Juan Soto, New York already has plenty of rumors flowing.

The Yankees will look to improve the club in many areas and may even add to an already stacked bullpen. New York reportedly has shown interest in Tohoko Rakuten Golden Eagles closer Yuki Matsui, according to Yahoo Japan.

Matsui reportedly will be making the jump to Major League Baseball after spending the last 10 years in the Nippon Professional Baseball League with the Golden Eagles. He has been one of the best closers in the league racking up 236 saves in his career so far. Matsui also has compiled an impressive 2.43 ERA throughout his 10-year career.

It's unclear exactly what level of interest the Yankees have in Matsui, but they were mentioned as one of the big league clubs who have scouted the lefty. Other teams mentioned were the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals.

New York could be an intriguing fit. The Yankees had the best bullpen in baseball in 2023 with a team ERA of 3.34. There's sure to be some turnover but much of the bullpen likely will remain the same. If the Yankees could add Matsui as well, it could help take them to another level.
