Yankees Star Mentioned As Trade Candidate Despite Impressive 2023 Season
The New York Yankees could end up trading one of their best offensive players this offseason.
New York has to make some changes. The Yankees won 82 games last year but missed the postseason. New York was expected to be one of the World Series contenders but instead dealt with injuries and a regression of the offense.
The Yankees have been mentioned as one of the most active teams early in free agency but haven't made any substantial moves to this point. New York is looking to improve the rotation with someone like Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency but may need to turn their focus to the trade market as well. One player who could end up getting traded this offseason is Yankees star slugger Gleyber Torres, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"The Yankees don’t have an abundance of options when it comes to trading from their 26-man roster, but Torres -- whose salary will likely jump to about $14 million in his final year before free agency -- is New York’s most attractive trade chip after hitting 25 home runs with a .800 OPS in 2023," Feinsand said. "With Anthony Volpe locked in as the shortstop, the Yankees could give Oswald Peraza a shot to play second base, with DJ LeMahieu -- who is signed through 2026 -- serving as a fallback option."
Feinsaind compiled a list of trade candidates for each Major League Baseball team and Torres was New York's option. This isn't too surprising as Torres' name has been mentioned in rumors on numerous occasions but it certainly would hurt the club's offense unless they made a significant upgrade elsewhere. It's too early to tell if a possible is imminent, but it is possible.
