Victor Wembanyama Eyeing Workout With Tim Duncan: ‘Can’t Think of a Better Role Model’
Transcendent prospect Victor Wembanyama was officially selected with the No. 1 pick by the Spurs in Thursday night’s NBA draft, and he’s already saying all the right things as the next face of the franchise.
Wembanyama reportedly told coach Gregg Popovich during the pre-draft process that he wanted to work with Tim Duncan and learn from him as he develops his NBA game.
“Tim Duncan, if I get the opportunity to work with him, I can’t really think of a better role model,” Wembanyama told reporters on Thursday night.
Duncan, who is widely regarded as one of the best power forwards to ever play the game, is the best player in San Antonio franchise history. As Wembanyama looks to walk in his footsteps, he’s clearly bracing the opportunity to learn from the NBA legend.

Wembanyama is certainly unique. He stands 7’ 5” with slashing ability like a wing but the size of an old-school NBA power forward or center. Wembanyama would certainly benefit from learning Duncan’s post game, which would help him develop into an extremely versatile offensive weapon.
Duncan was also a stalwart on the defensive end, and with Wembanyama’s skill set, he certainly has a high ceiling on that end of the floor as well.
It will be interesting to see how Wembanyama adapts to the NBA, but there’s no better former Spur for him to learn from than Duncan.
