Chicago Bulls guard Coby White is as locked in as he’s ever been his entire career. Now, on the cusp of stardom with his spectacular play this season, the former Tar Heel ace isn’t letting his guard down. Instead, he continues to put in the work even when he isn’t on the basketball court.

Soaking up knowledge

Already one of the most feared three-point shooters in the NBA this season, White continues to add more weapons to his arsenal, including the mastery of the pick-and-roll game. And while there’s nothing quite like getting real-time repetitions on the floor, White tries to get a leg up on the competition by studying the game film of his contemporaries.

“I’ve been covering all of it by watching film and [building] strength in the weight room, but it comes together with the repetition of all of it,” White said.

“I’ve been watching a lot of different players — even on nights off at home, just watching games, scrolling through Instagram or Twitter and seeing highlights.”

Learning from the league's best

White does not need to look too far for excellent examples of pick-and-roll proficiency. There are plenty of All-Star guards who excel in pick-and-roll situations, such as Dallas’ Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, New York’s Jalen Brunson, and Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

“[Luka] Doncic, [Jalen] Brunson does it a lot, Kyrie [Irving] is good at getting guys on his hip and getting to his spot. Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] does it a lot — lulls guys to sleep and then just knows when to attack, how to attack them. I feel like the league is full of really good guards that know how to do it, so I’m just trying to add that to my game,” White added.
