The Chicago Bulls aren’t in the NBA’s basement anymore, but they still have a long way to go before reaching the attic. DeMar DeRozan recently expressed this sentiment as the Bulls continue to ascend the Eastern Conference’s ladder. Now at 13-17 and inching ever closer to the .500 mark, the veteran wingman shared, “We’ve still got a lot of road to cover.”

Went through the mud

The Bulls were knee-deep in the mud early on, winning only five of their first 19 games. Despite the struggle, Chicago got down and dirty and, as a result, are now just a few wins away from evening up their win-loss record.

“Sometimes you’ve got to go through it so you can find a different type of motivation that you can come together with. Everyone wanted success so much. We put in the work and dedicated ourselves, and a lot of times, when the outcome wasn’t what you wanted, a lot of frustration comes,” DeRozan said, referring to the disjointed start that had many labeling them as the worst team in the league.

Sufficient motivation

DeRozan stated that he and the team heard all the talk. Took in all the criticism. And although it was tough, the team used it as fuel to drive them towards their goals.

“And that has to bring motivation to push through, and I think that’s what it did for us,” DeRozan quipped.

Now playing with renewed vigor and emphasizing quick ball movement and decision-making, DeRozan asserted that this is how the Bulls must play moving forward.

“That’s how we have to play, not being predictable. It’s hard to guard when we play that way and having the confidence no matter who is shooting the ball. It feels sustainable because we are getting easy shots, and when you know where your shots are coming from with the ball movement, it makes it a lot easier.”
