Breaking Down Cavaliers’ 2023-24 Season-Opening Shooting Guards
This past Saturday, the Cleveland Cavaliers made their preseason roster cuts heading into the 2023-24 regular season.
In our last Cavaliers roster breakdown, we examined the team’s point guards to open the regular season.
With Cleveland’s first regular season game just two days away, here is a breakdown of the shooting guards on the team's season-opening roster.
Donovan Mitchell
Last season, his first as a Cavalier, Donovan Mitchell had arguably the best individual season of his career.
The 27-year-old averaged new career-highs in points (28.3), steals (1.5, tied), and blocks (0.4, tied) per game, with career-best field goal (48.4%), three-point (38.6%, tied), and free throw (86.7%) percentages.
These marks led to his fourth consecutive All-Star selection (first start) and first All-NBA selection (Second Team).
Caris LeVert
In his first full season with Cleveland, Caris LeVert served a crucial role as the team’s sixth man. The 29-year-old averaged 12.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting a career-best 39.2% from three.
LeVert also stepped up in the Cavaliers’ starting lineup at times last season, starting 30 of his 74 games played.
Sam Merrill
After Cleveland inked Sam Merrill to a 10-day contract on March 3, he was quickly signed to a three-year contract just 11 days later. The sharpshooter averaged over 20 points per game and shot over 44% from deep for the Cavaliers' 2023 Summer League championship team.
He was originally the 60th selection in the 2020 NBA Draft, and played his first two NBA seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies, respectively.
In our next Cavaliers roster breakdown, we’ll examine Cleveland's small forwards.
