Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell Interested In Playing In 2024 Olympics
Two days ago, the Cleveland Cavaliers played their first regular-season game in Europe in franchise history, earning a 111-102 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in the 2024 NBA Paris Game.
But this will not be the only time this year where NBA players will take the floor in Paris, France, because it is also the site of the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Donovan Mitchell, who scored a season-high 45 points on Thursday, could potentially take part in the games this upcoming summer.
After Thursday’s contest, Mitchell was asked what he liked the most about his experiences in Paris this past week, and if he would like to come back in the summer for the Olympics.
“Definitely. I’d love to come back and play in the Olympics. This city is a very electric basketball city. I realized that when I first came out here on my shoe tour, and I didn’t realize it. So now, just seeing it, being here, this is my third or fourth time out here. Just being able to see this experience, to be a part of this and do it with the NBA, do it with my teammates, it’s incredible. I’ve had a lot of fun, and I’m glad we got the win as well.”
The four-time reigning NBA All Star was a member of Team USA’s seventh-place team in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Mitchell averaged 13.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in the tournament.
He was later named a finalist for the U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team in both 2020 and 2021, but has yet to compete in an Olympic Games.
Based on his past four seasons and another dominant campaign so far in 2023-24, Mitchell has made a strong case to make his first-ever U.S. Olympic team.
